[The Circle] Add – don't edit.

October 16, 2024

The Circle, Issue #56

Improve your site, conquer your business systems, and embrace a more spacious style of productivity inside The Coworking Coven: the only tech & business support space for service-based witches.

The next time you are writing copy for your website: the headlines, calls to action, meta descriptions, micro copy, link text... anything... I want you to try something:

Add – don't edit.

I want you to open up your writing tool of choice and use the numbered list feature. Start writing at Number 1 and every time you have a new thought or way of saying something create a line.

If you come to a point where you want to edit anything you've already written... don't. Instead, create a new line and start again.

Whether you are changing one word from a line or all of them, create a list. A long list. Write and rewrite a dozen times. Two dozen. Exhaust yourself of all ideas. Keep adding lines. But don't edit anything before your current line.

If you're on line 20 and want to rework line 3 – make line 21 and start.

This is a spin on an exercise I learned in CopySchool (no, I'm not a copywriter but I'm always learning) and it's something akin to version control in programming or backing up your website before making drastic aesthetic changes: always have something you can go back to in case the new thing didn't work out as planned.

I don't know about you, but I have brilliant ideas while I'm braindumping and writing and if I edit myself for any reason mid-thought... I will absolutely lose my train of thought or forget a previous brilliant idea that I had inevitably deleted because I thought I had a better one.0/10. Don't recommend. Brains aren't great at storage. But Notion is and "Undo" only goes so far.

Add – don't edit.

Isn't this more work? Yes.

Won't this make the writing take longer? Yes.

Won't this make the Google Doc or Notion Page absolutely massive? Yes.

Is it worth the effort?

You won't know until you try.

P.S. It was this exercise alone that birthed my guide, Pomodoro® Primer for Magic Makers. And... maybe something else I'm working on. Who can tell. ;-)
