In a time where we share everything, and I mean everything, on the internet –what would it look like to keep some things for ourselves? Such as our business goals.

Are you team #ShareYourGoals or team #MoveInSilence?

There are a lot of think pieces on the internet about sharing your big goals before you even begin. Such as writing a book, designing a website, or even... starting a business.

Some say sharing the goal with a group of your best supporters is the key to achieving the goal, while others say sharing the goal and receiving the praise for the share is akin to achieving it, thus making it difficult to actually... achieve it.

I'm a prime example of this, so perhaps I'm biased. I have announced goals and then never achieved them. And then I feel like shit.

I'll say, "Oh, this is the year I'm going to do XYZ!" And then life's narrator comes on all matter of fact saying, "It was, in fact, not the year she was going to achieve XYZ."

But when I move in silence? I get shit done.

And I feel powerful.

I have come to realize there are a few reasons why this is:

  • sometimes I just want things for me (and that's okay)
  • there is no outside voice or influence on the goal
  • when I tell no one I get no one's unsolicited opinions or advice
  • I'm free to do my work and be more creative
  • if the scope of the goal changes, I can pivot without pressure
  • when I'm done I can announce everything and surprise people
  • there is no urgency to share updates at any point, but there is a desire to do so
  • I'm more forgiving of myself if "life happens" and the goal must be paused

These days I'm embracing my "silent era" in my business. I'm telling no one what I'm working on. And right now I'm itching to share! This means the goal still feels challenging, yet enjoyable. So I'm keeping my mouth shut.

How about you?

What was the last goal you achieved? And did you tell anyone about it before hand?

P.S. While I'm not sharing my goal, I am reaching out for the support I need as I need it. I will move in silence, but I will not struggle in it. You don't have to, either.
